This course teaches you simple memorable tools and repeats basic concepts that enhance learning and provide you with a simple action plan that you can apply in an emergency. This is a practical course during which you will develop relevant knowledge and skill sets and apply them in relatable practical first aid scenarios. Our trainers are experienced at facilitating training to diverse groups of learners while developing you individually to be able to confidently manage first aid emergencies you may encounter in your private or work life.
NZQA unit standards and new Zealand First Aid certificate
This course includes assessment against NZQA unit standards:
- 6402 – Provide basic life support (level 2, 2 credits)
- 6401 – Provide first aid (level 2, 1 credit)
- 6400 – Manage first aid in an emergency situation (level 3, 2 credits)
We can register these credits on your NZQA Record of Achievement if you provide us with your NSN (NZQA) number and date of birth. If you do not have an NZQA Record of Achievement we can set this up for you.
This course also grants you the New Zealand First Aid Certificate. You can find out more about this certificate in the First Aid as a Life Skill document, which outlines core compliance requirements for New Zealand first aid training. Our unique and practical training style develops your first aid skills as an individual and as an effective team member. Upon completion of this course you will be able to:
- Apply solid first aid knowledge and skills to first aid emergency situations
- Manage first aid emergencies by yourself and in a team
- Identify resources in your everyday environment that can be used to support effective first aid
- Identifying and managing dangers at the emergency scene to ensure safety for the first aider, patient and bystanders
- Recognising first aid problems
- Seeking appropriate help, including calling 111, Healthline or other medical support services
- Conducting a primary assessment – applying DRSABCD
- Managing choking for adults, children, and infants

This course will develop your basic life support skills, including CPR, use of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), managing choking, shock, and life-threatening bleeding. It includes assessment of NZQA unit standard 6402. It does not include first aid for most trauma or medical conditions or the management of emergency situations. This course updates and develops your first aid knowledge and skills in a practical and relatable way and revalidates your previous certificate. Depending on your previous certificate, it revalidates unit standards 6402, 6401, and 6400, or unit standards 6402 and 6401. This course revalidates your previous assessment against NZQA unit standards 6402, 6401, and 6400. It can therefore revalidate a previous Workplace First Aider certificate (or equivalent) or a previous Foundation First Aid certificate (or equivalent).

Our First Aid for Rural Environments course overs the most important first aid needs of a rural environments in New Zealand. It will be tailored to your needs and prepare you to effectively manage first aid emergencies you may encounter, whether you live by the ocean, in the mountains, near lakes or rivers, surrounded by forest or farmland.
What this course covers
- Practical first aid skills such as stopping severe bleeding, managing burns, fractures, impalements, and head injuries (topics tailored to your needs)
- Moving a patient
- Performing CPR (adult)
- Identifying, managing, and alleviating patient deterioration
- Managing shock
- First aid equipment needs and identifying resources in your everyday environment that can be used to support effective first aid
- Scenario work (scenarios will be tailored to your needs)
- Special considerations for rural environments (working and living in isolation, difficulties accessing emergency services, remoteness)
- Dealing with first aid emergencies in cold and hot environments
- Getting help
The key features of this course are:
- 4-hour course (or longer, if needed), delivered face-to-face
- No homework, no written assessment
- Focuses on practical skills and relevant scenarios
- Does not include unit standard assessment
Each Learner is provided with a Practical Training Solutions Quick Reference First Aid Guide that serves as a practical reference for emergencies and contains relevant information and practical tips on the various topics covered during the course.
Course duration and delivery
The course is typically delivered in a 4-hours practical session (plus breaks) but can be extended if needed to cover everything you’d like to have included.

- Attend this course with others working or living with you because you will learn to work as a team and identify resources in your everyday environment that can be used to support effective first aid.
- Wear comfortable clothing because during our practical scenarios you will work in groups as a first aider and patient in a variety of settings.
- Arrive early for your practical session so you can settle in without stress and be off to a good start. This enables you to focus on your learning and development without distractions.
- Have an open mind because this course is not what you may expect from a first aid course. Participate actively and take full advantage of all learning opportunities.
- Think about how you may encounter the first aid topics and emergencies covered in your work environment. Reflect on what you learn and how it relates to you and your workmates. Your trainer is there to assist you in understanding how to apply what you learn in your context.
